COMPARING ITALIAN CHEESES
Have you ever wondered about the difference between some of the most popular Italian cheeses?! Well, we’ve rounded up four of our favourites and provided you with some recipe inspiration too!
Bocconcini cheese
Small, bite-sized mozzarella cheese that originated in Naples, Italy. It is a semi-soft and mild-flavoured cheese, generally made from a combination of water buffalo and cows milk. You’ll find bocconcini cheese packaged in whey or water.
Bocconcini cheese is most well-known for its use in the traditional Caprese salad made with fresh tomatoes and basil. However, in the summer season it would be delicious served with grilled peaches, mint and chopped pistachios along with a drizzle of maple syrup and pinch of salt.
Fior di latte
Traditionally soft mozzarella cheese. Made with high-quality whole cow’s milk, you’ll find this cheese has a fresh, milky taste with a smooth and creamy texture. Fior de latte originates from Agerola, on Italy’s Amalfi Coast.
Try Fior di latte cheese on your favourite pizza. Or highlight it by making a simple white pizza topped with olive oil, grated parmesan cheese and fior di latte. Then, top with fresh prosciutto when it comes out of the oven.
Burrata
Burrata is a mild cheese made of mozzarella and cream. A soft shell wraps this cheese and when you cut into it a creamy center is revealed. It is made in the Apuila region of Italy.
Burrata cheese is best enjoyed at room temperature so try to remove it from the fridge at least a half hour before serving. Try pairing burrata drizzled with olive oil alongside fresh basil or arugula, ripe tomatoes and crusty bread. Or, try it drizzled with chili oil, some fresh herbs and grissini.
Buffalo mozzarella
Made from the milk of water buffalos. The water buffalo’s milk has a high fat content so it lends to the creamy, soft and very flavourful buffalo mozzarella cheese. This cheese is primarily produced in Naples, Italy.
Buffalo mozzarella can be used on one of the most traditional pizzas with tomato sauce and basil. You could try this cheese simply paired with roasted vegetables or for a summer appetizer served with sliced plums, balsamic vinegar reduction, pine nuts and chopped mint.
